League of Legends ARAM Gets 3-Map Rotation and Reworked Champ Select

For years, LoL players have charged into battle on the icy bridge of Howling Abyss. But starting June 25, 2025, League of Legends is shaking things up in a major way. With the launch of Patch 25.13, Riot Games is introducing a revamped ARAM experience, complete with a three-map rotation and a reworked Champion Select system designed to make matches more fun, more strategic, and a little less random.

If you’re someone who plays ARAM exclusively or just enjoys the chaos of All Random All Mid from time to time, this update is set to boost your experience in exciting new directions.

ARAM Now Features Three Unique Maps

The most significant update is the addition of two new maps alongside Howling Abyss. Now, each ARAM game will rotate between:

  • Howling Abyss (the classic)
  • Butcher’s Bridge (a revamped favorite)
  • Koeshin’s Crossing (a brand-new map themed after the Spirit Blossom universe)

This rotation aims to keep ARAM fresh and engaging without straying too far from what makes it fun. According to Eduardo Cortejoso, Riot’s Modes Product Lead, the team wanted to introduce meaningful changes while still respecting what ARAM players love about the mode. While the rotation is planned to be permanent, Riot is keeping the door open for tweaks based on community feedback.

What’s New in Butcher’s Bridge

Butcher’s Bridge isn’t just a visual reskin—it brings new gameplay elements. Portals have been replaced by cannons, allowing players to launch themselves to positions up to their furthest intact tower. This adds a new layer of mobility and counterplay that could shake up the usual ARAM dynamics.

Another big change is the central alcove, which breaks up the map’s straight-line design. Smashing a flower located here grants a temporary shield and cooldown refund—making it a strategic point for early game trades or clutch comebacks.

Koeshin’s Crossing: A Spirit Blossom Special

Koeshin’s Crossing is the newest addition and is loaded with thematic details tied to the ongoing Spirit Blossom narrative. Bloom Portals scattered across the map work like instant teleporters, allowing players—especially assassins and melee champs—to flank quickly or escape danger without any channeling time.

This map also gives players a glimpse into the Spirit Realm when they die. Instead of the usual gray screen, you’ll see a stylized, otherworldly version of the battlefield, giving your downtime a thematic twist.

Shopkeepers on this map even have new voice lines referencing key events in Runeterra’s lore. Eduardo mentioned that players should keep an eye out for environmental Easter eggs, hinting that this is part of Riot’s ongoing effort to boost in-game storytelling through world design.

Champion Select Gets a Much-Needed Overhaul

One of the most frustrating parts of ARAM has always been its randomized Champion Select, where you might get stuck with a champion you hate, and rerolling can feel like gambling. The new system changes that.

Now, players will usually get a choice between two champions, and occasionally a third option will appear.

The catch? Unselected champions don’t just disappear—they go to a teamwide bench, where anyone can claim them. This encourages teamwork and reduces the pressure to reroll, cutting down on flame wars before the match even starts.

This system not only makes each game more enjoyable but also introduces more strategy during pick phase—allowing you to build comps and adapt more fluidly. It’s a smart move that could help ARAM appeal to more competitive LoL players who might have dismissed the mode as too chaotic in the past.

Item Update: The Return of Spectral Cutlass

Another exciting addition is the return of Spectral Cutlass, an old item reintroduced to all three ARAM maps. Tailored for assassins and mobility-focused champions, this legacy item adds more diversity to itemization and opens up new build paths for specific team comps, giving you a better path to victory, and improving variety in League of Legends’ gameplay.

Whether you’re trying to boost your team’s utility or just mix things up with experimental builds, the Spectral Cutlass could provide some fresh gameplay variety.

A Better ARAM for Casual and Competitive Players

With these updates, Riot is clearly aiming to boost ARAM’s standing within the broader League of Legends ecosystem. While ARAM will never replace Summoner’s Rift for climbing the ranked ladder, the introduction of deeper mechanics, map variety, and improved Champion Select could make it a more appealing side mode for players looking to relax or warm up without sacrificing depth.

Even though ARAM doesn’t affect your official rank, these changes bring meaningful improvements that align with Riot’s goal of increasing player satisfaction across all modes. And who knows? With enough positive feedback, these changes might pave the way for even more innovation in the future.
